Welcome to my page dedicated to Dog Portrait Paintings. And if you’re perhaps considering commissioning a custom portrait of your lovely doggy, I’m hoping the information below might help give you a sense of what’s involved.

Perhaps the first thing to mention is that I work in oil paint, which is, a wonderful magical medium, but it does have a few quirks. And one of these is the issue of drying time. I work in many layers during the painting process, refining the portrait as I go, so let’s just say it’s not very speedy. I reckon it would be around three to four weeks usually for the painting process itself.
And then, if you want that final touch of varnishing which I’d highly recommend for your painting, it will take another month or two. Thus, with all this in mind if you were looking for that cherished custom painting of your doggy, best to be planning three months out.
Now, what if the dog portrait is a gift and you need it much sooner?
Well, in this case, I could maybe turn something around a small portrait in three to four weeks, and then I could send it to you unvarnished.
After that, just wait a couple of months and send it back to me for varnishing, so the painting can look at its absolute best, while also being protected into the future. Now, of course, this is much easier done if you’re living in Ireland, but if you’re living somewhere else, maybe asking a local artist or framer might be an easier option.
So, what if you’re interested in exploring the idea of commissioning a custom dog portrait, how does it all work?
The first thing would be to find a bunch of your favourite photos of the dog and then email them on to me. And worth noting here, that even if there’s one photo, in particular which you love of your dog, it’s still good for me to see up to five or ten images. It might sound funny, but this will help me get a sense of the dog’s particular character and personality. This all helps me create the very best portrait for you, that I can.
Of course, we must eventually discuss the pesky topic of price as well, which I’m sure you’ve been waiting for. And therefore, before you go sorting and collecting all those favourite doggy pics it might be worth having a quick look at my price list below, just to see if I’m the right artist for you.
